Living classrooms
Learning in a living environment
A living classroom is an outdoor space designed for learning. These environments are stimulating, interactive and fun.
Introduction to Living Classrooms
Essentially the living classroom is an outdoor area of the school that has been designed for learning experiences. For example, plants can be used to tell a story or demonstrate a process. The design is specific to the needs of the school. The area will be landscaped to provide a good quality learning environment. The classroom is interactive and pupils are encouraged to become involved.
An exciting resource for teachers
The living classroom is an opportunity for teachers to enhance their lessons. The garden can not only provide a stimulating backdrop to lessons but can become an integral part of the learning process. A tree is a living demonstration of recycling and edible berries can be collected as part of a session on cooking.
Providing a diverse learning environment
For pupils….
By providing diverse spaces for learning we are giving all pupils equal chance to succeed. For example, pupils who become distracted from their work inside may find a change of scene focuses them.
For teachers….
A change of scene can offer breathing space in a programme of work. On a practical basis the living classroom is a good place for messy activities or activities that need more space.
What can Grounds4Change offer?
Grounds4Change can offer a complete package to suit the needs of your school. We can undertake pupil consultation, design and installation. If needed we can also offer a workshop for staff that focuses on how to make the most of the living classroom including many ideas for curriculum-linked learning. Our team contains both qualified horticulturalists and staff experienced in delivering workshops. An artist could also be involved to enhance the garden. All staff will have up to date CRB checks.
Grounds4Change in action
Grounds4Change is a not-for-profit organisation involved in a variety of environmental initiatives across Bristol. We operate a subsidised community gardening service that prioritises elderly and disabled people and we organise community clean ups. All of our charitable work is delivered in the most deprived areas of Bristol. The commercial work we undertake generates income to support the charitable work.
