Grounds4Change have teamed up with the Southmead Community Association in order to renovate the Southmead Meeting Rooms on Greystoke Avenue. The vacant building and gardens has been an eyesore for many years, but it will now get a new lease of life when Bristol City Council transfer this asset back over for community use.

Grounds4Change have not been based in Southmead since 2007, even though most of our customers, trainees and events are here.

We are currently working on a Big Lottery bid to help fund the improvements desperately need for the Meeting Rooms.

What do you think about this? Do you think it’s a good idea or not? Please let us know your thoughts by the end of February 2012 by leaving a comment on the website or calling the office on 0117 969 3815

We’ll keep you updated on our progress….

Staff from Grounds4Change are completing the last few community gardens under the soon to end Neighborhood Renewal funding. Approximately 20 gardens have been identified for a makeover with a low maintenance scheme. The plan is to leave a long lasting legacy in the area despite the end to the funding.

Staff at Grounds4Change are currently working hard to continue the community gardening service beyond March 31st. Robert Kendall (Community Gardening Coordinator) said, “It is very likely we will offer a community gardening service but it will not be of the same size as it has been in the past 7 years.”

A tree was planted by residents of Henacre Road, Lawrence Weston in memory of local man Craig. The memorial tree was the idea of Craig’s family. A Magnolia tree has been chosen because it bears large flowers in the spring and will brighten up the area for many years.

Hopefully not any more. A joint effort between Grounds4Change, SITA and the Parks Department has given Claremont Street a new look. First of all SITA removed 5 tonnes of fly tipped rubbish and sent the Drugs and Sex litter team in to sweep the area. Then the Parks Department brought Grounds4Change in to clear out the undergrowth, remove a further 4 tonnes of rubbish, plant up a new hedge and grass seed.

The Environment Officer for Easton and Lawrence Hill said,”Action was taken after a group of residents and agencies held a walkabout in November to identify the areas in need of attention. There was also a survey of residents to make sure we listened to the views of local people. They wanted to keep the trees, remove the overgrowth but have a neat hedge planted that would deter people from climbing over the fences at the back of the properties.”

The positive reaction from the community has been immediate. People have been walking past stopping to make comments to the landscaping team, we have had emails from members of the community and people have been calling into the partnership office on Stapleton Road.

Some of the comments can be viewed on this website.

The Juicy Bitz juice bar in Lawrence Weston has had it’s back garden transformed with the help of local young people from the community. The young people showed an interest in improving the site that was a mess of brambles and wind-blown rubbish. We cleared the brambles and collected the litter for recycling. The new fence makes the area secure and will stop rubbish blowing in. When the weather improved the landscaping team will work with the young people to turf the garden. We will also be planting shrubs, flowers and vegetables.
